Kuantan, the capital of Pahang state, sits on Malaysia's east coast — facing the South China Sea. It's not as famous as Penang or Malacca, but for those who know it, Kuantan offers something those cities cannot: genuine coastal tranquillity, outstanding fresh seafood, and access to some of Malaysia's most beautiful beaches and a remarkable natural phenomenon.
Distance: ~350 km from Singapore
Estimated Drive Time: 4–5 hours (depending on route and traffic)
Two Route Options:
Route 1 (Via North-South Expressway + Route 12):
Singapore → Johor Bahru → Ayer Hitam → Segamat → Bahau → Kuantan
Mostly expressway; faster but passes through the interior.
Route 2 (Coastal Route via Mersing):
Singapore → Johor Bahru → Kota Tinggi → Mersing → Pekan → Kuantan
Slightly slower (~5.5 hours) but dramatically more scenic — you drive along the South China Sea coast through fishing villages, past white sand beaches and tropical forest.
VenQ recommends the coastal route for travellers who want a proper road trip experience.
A small fishing town 155 km from JB and the embarkation point for Pulau Tioman (one of Malaysia's most beautiful islands). The town's waterfront seafood restaurants are excellent for a lunch stop.
A legendary backpacker and surfer destination. Long stretch of golden sand, calm warm water, and a charming village atmosphere. Club Med operates a resort here. Sea turtles nest on these beaches between May and September.
The central beach of Kuantan, 5 km from the town centre. A beautiful crescent of sand flanked by rocky headlands. The Hyatt Regency Kuantan overlooks the bay — one of Malaysia's finest beach hotels.
A former tin mining town deep in the jungle interior. The Panorama Hill hike (45 minutes) rewards with a spectacular sunrise view over a sea of clouds filling the river valley below. Start hiking at 5am to reach the summit by sunrise.
The seafood restaurants along Jalan Teluk Cempedak and Jalan Besar serve some of Malaysia's finest and freshest east coast catch: steamed grouper, butter prawns, salt-baked crab, and stingray in sambal.
